One-Week Itinerary In Rome
Seven Days To Explore Rome At A Gentler Pace
Updated Sept. 30, 2026
These are 7 days at the destination, with arrival and departure travel planned separately. From the United States, allow for flight time, the date change where relevant and a gentler start after the journey.
Use the order below as a starting point, then adjust it to opening days, weather and the reservations you can actually secure. Keep nearby experiences together and leave time for meals and the journey between stops.
Day 1: Ancient Rome With Room To Breathe
Morning: Use your reserved Colosseum time and explore the Forum or Palatine according to your ticket and energy. Bring water and allow for security.
Afternoon And Evening: Take a long lunch and a lighter walk in Monti. Keep the evening close to your base rather than adding another major ticketed attraction.
Day 2: Piazzas, The Pantheon And Trevi
Morning: Walk a historic-center route connecting the Pantheon area, Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain. Confirm any interior ticket you want.
Afternoon And Evening: Enjoy lunch and a slower afternoon, then choose dinner nearby. If the Vatican is your main priority, substitute a focused Vatican day instead of adding it to this route.
Day 3: A Focused Vatican Day
Morning: Reserve the Vatican Museums if the collections and Sistine Chapel are priorities. Check dress and entry instructions before leaving.
Afternoon And Evening: Consider St. Peter's Basilica according to its current access and your remaining energy. Leave time for Prati or the river and avoid a demanding evening plan.
Day 4: Art And A Quieter Collection
Morning: Choose another museum or gallery that genuinely interests you and confirm its reservation rules. Keep the morning focused.
Afternoon And Evening: Walk in a nearby park or neighborhood, with a leisurely meal. Rome offers more than the largest sights, and this is a day to enjoy that variety.
Day 5: Trastevere And The River
Morning: Explore Trastevere's streets and a church or small attraction with current visiting hours checked. Pause for coffee and lunch.
Afternoon And Evening: Cross the river for another walk if you wish or stay for dinner. Plan the return to your hotel and keep noise down on residential streets.
Day 6: A Flexible Rome Day Or Excursion
Morning: Use the day for a missed attraction or an organized outing beyond the city if it is a real priority. Check the full travel time before booking.
Afternoon And Evening: Do not add a long excursion merely because you have a spare day. A market, a good lunch and time revisiting a favorite piazza can be just as rewarding.
Day 7: A Final Local Morning
Morning: Enjoy breakfast and a short walk near the hotel. Leave time for packing, checkout and collecting any stored luggage.
Afternoon And Evening: Confirm whether you are departing from FCO or CIA and use the correct transfer. Build in time for road traffic, security and the airport process.
If you are leaving today, choose one nearby priority and leave the remaining time for packing, transport and the airport. If departure is tomorrow, enjoy the full day at the pace outlined above.
